First presented at the Recertification Clinic downtown YMCA, May 2004

The warm-up is, in my opinion, the hardest segment and most important segment of your class. Eliminating a discussion of physiological importance of the Warm-up, psychologically it introduces you to the class. People will decide in those few first minutes if they like you, will like the class and ultimately if they will stay.

For this reason, your warm-up should reflect your class level, it’s complexity and your style of teaching.

In my advanced Step classes, my first block is choreographed, and uses the Step.

All my choreography is tap free and lead leg changing Try this one, and let me know:

Warm-up:

A. tap 4 x the Step (advanced variation includes tapping facing the left side of the room, tap straddle, tap straddle 2x then exit) 8cts

B. 2x single knees 8cts

C. Mambo cha-cha (one foot on Step and turn to back of room), pivot on floor facing back 8cts

D. 2 x over top turn (revolving door) 8cts

teaching tips:

  1. Begin with the tap the Step 4 X and march on floor, then add the 2 single knees on Step. Add the advanced variation with the straddle if you wish. (A+B)
  2. I teach over the top with taps for a group that is used to tap classes otherwise, I simply teach over top turn (revolving door). Remember you must turn on the floor in Front of the Step and also when you return (D)
  3. teach the mambo cha-cha, them mambo cha-cha + mambo; then offer pivot as alternative to mambo (C)
  4. then link mambo cha-cha with pivot and add Over top turn (C+D)
  5. Repeat A+B+C+D then Repeat Left

With this sequence your block will be balanced in the teaching part and in the final Product
