When I create choreography for Hi/lo or Step
for that matter, I am careful to make my blocks fluid and automatically lead
leg changing. I pride myself on balance. I therefore avoid, in choreographed
routines, such neutral moves as Jumping Jacks and other cardio moves that place
the body in a position that makes it obligatory for the instructor to cue right
or left for the next sequence of moves. This does not mean that I never use
Jumping Jacks in choreography; in fact the Jack is one of my favorite moves. I
will use neutral moves such as Jumping Jacks in Balanced blocks of
choreography. This simply means that within 32 cts say, the block will use the
same amount of moves on the right leg as left, making it therefore balanced
within itself and there is no need to repeat it on the left. I also use the
Jack in cardio intervals.
Check out this fun block that I am happy to share with you; it is
balanced within itself even though it doesn’t appear to be.
The 3 knees on the second line turn people to face back of the room for interest and variety, but if this makes you feel uncomfortable to teach, then the choreography can remain facing front.
I like the Grapevine Diamond shape, but you
can also do a square. To teach, do 4 Grapevines laterally then add the
direction Right diagonal, Left diagonal, Right and then left to face front
again.
